Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Character Name: Uzume
Pantheon: Japanese/Shinto
Parentage: None of note.
Patronage: Revelry, Dawn, Good Health, and Dance
Residence: Uzume has an old fashioned home in Miyakojima, Okinawa. It has the rice paper sliding panels, and the wood floors. There is furnace that is used for heating the floors, and the kitchen has large kilns to place pots upon, although there are some modern amenaties such as a fridge, a television, and a telephone installed. She still rolls out her bed onto the floor instead of trading it in for an actual western style with a mattress. Large cabinets line the rooms where the bedding is tucked in at night along with her clothes. Her most notable modern feature is that of her insanely large music collection ranging from 45s to CDs. There are no other electric powered utilities in her home other than the fridge, television, phone, and stereo as she feels there is no need for it.

There are many first impressions one can come across when they first meet Uzume. Most definitely that she is very `jolly`. She always seems to have a smile on her face, especially in the most dire situations. She prefers to laugh at her problems rather than cry over them. If you are more of a threat, you'll find that she is hardly intimidated.

She can come off as shameless to people who don't know her, not afraid to show off her body if it means catching you off guard. She understands the way her body looks and how to use it, whether it is to entice or confuse, or simply to shock or amuse. Her mannerisms are flirty and she holds herself with a knowing and confident air.

Once Uzume has set herself to a task, she will work to carry it out to it's end. She usually works more of using herself than other people. She has laid her life on the line for those she cared about and for those of whom her loyalties lie. This tends to balance out the fact that she seems never to take anything seriously.

When angered, however, when truly angered, the smile will fade. Not to a frown, but to something quite unreadable and steel-like. Frowns give you wrinkles, not that she can get them. She doesn't believe frowning is beautiful and tends to be as vain as she is proud.

Uzume, though wide in fame, has only been recounted for two or three actual stories. Her most famed tale that is told from generation to generation is that of how she drew out the goddess Amateresu from her place of hiding. And some would think this is possibly where her life began, but she has been around before that. Known to all her friends as the a happy-go-lucky girl, when Amateresu decided to tuck herself away in fear of her raged brother, it was Uzume who decided to step up and attempt to coax her out, but not with her words, no. She upturned a tub and danced upon it slipping her clothes off and making funny lewd gestures to insight the crowd of gods into a laughter so raucous that the goddess had to peek her head out to see. Thusly, she was merited with restoring life to the world by bringing the sun back to nourish it.

She wasn't one to sit and bask in any sort of glory, however. She soon retreated back to her life of teaching mortal women how to envoke the gods when they needed aid, but she would soon be called again when Ninigi would descend to earth to pacify the people and plant rice, she was called on again to accompany him. There stood a fierce looking creature in his way and she went to meet him. Removing her top, she laughed heartily confusing the man, before they had a conversation and it was explained that he was there to help Ninigi. Out of gratitude, she was then handed to him in marriage. She didn't complain.

Afterwards, she gathered up all the creatures of the sea, lakes, and streams and asked them, nicely, to swear fealty to the gods. Only the sea slug refused, which is why it looks like it's been sliced open when it runs along the floor.

Since then, her life has been quite uneventful as she's moved to Okinawa. As people still pray at her shrines and give her offerings and ask for things, she couldn't quite retire. She loves the nightlife in Tokyo, but she wouldn't want to live there, and prefers her quiet place where people still do things the old way, even if some of them have a new twist. Somehow she's managed to keep a hold on her followers despite the information age and missionaries coming to steal convert them.

The change had angered her at first, but she has resigned to believe it was eventually inevitable. Her people are resilient and hold on strongly to their old ways and herself, so she does not feel as threatened as she had before.</td>
